Some patients may want to rely on anti-anxiety medication to calm their nerves before a dental procedure. Benzodiazepines which are generally prescribed by dentists include Valium, Xanax, Ativan, and Halcion. Benzodiazepines enhance the effect neurotransmitter (GABA) gamma-aminobutyric acid at the GABA receptor which results in sedative and anti-anxiety properties.
It is important for patients to know that there are two types of benzodiazepines Sedative and Anti Anxiety. Sedative-hypnotics are used to induce calm, this can range anywhere from drowsiness to sleep. This particular sleep state is used as a form of physiological sleep. Anti-anxiety hypnotics are used to relieve anxiety for a state of relaxation.
