Immediate Dentures

What Is an Immediate Denture?

An immediate denture will allow it to appear as though you do not have any missing teeth immediately after having your teeth extracted.

Creating an immediate denture is a multistep process. The first step takes place before your remaining teeth are extracted. Our dental practice will make impressions of your gums and your teeth. We take impressions of your gums and teeth so we will be able to make a “blueprint” for creating your dentures. This “blueprint” is then used to make a set of dentures that will fit remarkably well. They will feel comfortable and more natural. This is due to the fact that the dentures were created with precision from the impressions we took of your teeth before extraction.

Important Notes

It is usually not possible to check the fit of dentures before your teeth are extracted. Therefore, there are times when we will need to make adjustments to your dentures after extraction. These adjustments are usually made if there is not enough room between the teeth when opening the mouth. These small changes will ensure that you have a set of dentures that will be both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

What to Expect After Extraction

After extraction you will need to make sure you are carefully following the postoperative instructions. Having teeth extracted is a big change for your mouth. Your bones and gums will need time to adjust to the removal of teeth. Your bones and gums will usually recede and will not remain in the same place they were before the teeth were extracted. It is common for our patients to schedule several appointments during the adjustment period. The check-ups during this period allow for us to check for problems. It will also allow us to make sure the healing process is taking place the way it should.

Shuayb Dental will work with you throughout the healing process to create the perfect fit. Tissue conditioners and temporary linings are a critical part of that process. Once your mouth has healed properly and adjusts to your dentures a permanent reline will be used to create more comfort. The permanent reline will also allow you to have a more precise fit. Due to the drastic changes that take place in your mouth after the extraction and healing process, a new denture may need to be created to fit your needs.

Implant Retained Dentures

When a tooth is lost, it should be replaced. It is important to maintain proper dental health. A missing tooth will obviously change your appearance. However, your appearance is not the only thing that changes when you lose a tooth. A large number of things will be affected by the loss of a tooth. A missing tooth can affect your speech and your ability to chew food. Additionally it can cause unnatural pressure to the teeth surrounding the missing tooth. The added pressure can cause nerve and muscle pain. This in turn can cause severe headaches.

Each patient is different. Some patients will having issues eating food with lower dentures. Implant replacement may be the right option for those of you who are uncomfortable with standard lower dentures. There are several different options to accommodate your individual needs.

The first option you have is to get implants placed in your lower jaw. Four implants in total will allow enough stability to have a denture snap onto the implants. The denture will remain more secure with implants. It is important to note that the denture will still move. You will also have all of the same issues with sore spots because the dentures do move a little. This movement can cause friction against the gums and cause irritation. Food trapped under the dentures will still create issues just like with normal dentures.

The second option is called a bar attachment denture. This involves having four to six implants. Then we allow the implants to heal land then attach a bar to the implants. This bar is customized and individualized for your mouth. Retention clips are then used to allow your denture to attach to the bar. This option is one of the most stable denture options. Therefore there is less friction with the gums and less issues with food being trapped beneath the dentures. Despite the denture being stable, you will still be able to remove the denture.

The third option we will discuss is a permanent denture. The permanent denture is held in place by screws or clasps. You will still have about 5 implants as well. This combination between the implants and screws-clasps allow for the denture to be held in place much more securely than other denture types. You will not be able to remove this type of denture. Despite appearance, it does not rest against the gums. Therefore, you will be able to clean beneath the denture without having to remove it.

Upper dentures can have similar procedures done but will require more implants to secure the denture into place.

There are a large number of benefits to having dental implant style dentures. They are superior in every way to standard dentures. Call us to find out more or if you have any questions about dentures. Shuayb Dental looks forward to working with you.

Partial Dentures

Want to find out more about partial dentures? You are in the right place.

What Is a Partial Denture?

A partial denture is one that does not take the place of all upper of lower teeth. Most people who have partial dentures only have one to three missing teeth. When a partial denture is well done most people will never know you have one.

A partial denture is made out of acrylic or metal. Every patient’s needs are different. The custom specifications to which we create each partial reduces the probability of your other teeth or gums being affected.

Most patients prefer metal partial dentures. An acrylic partial is normally only used temporarily and is not usually as aesthetically pleasing. Metal partials by their very nature are stronger. Therefore they are able to be made thinner which is more appealing to the eye. Shuayb Dental will discuss the length of time in which you anticipate needing a partial. We will then discuss your options and let you make a decision about what you feel is best for your needs.

Speech and Eating

If you remember what it was like as child to have a missing tooth or are currently missing a tooth you understand how much it impacts your speech. A partial denture will allow you to regain your natural ability to speak clearly.

The loss of a tooth or teeth will almost certainly affect your ability to eat food. Few people understand how carefully calibrated a partial denture has to be in order to allow for pressure to be distributed evenly across all teeth. When a person is chewing, equal pressure distribution is critical to keep you from experiencing pain. Shuayb Dental has the dental technology and experience to ensure you get a partial denture that is right for you.
